When I was very young my soldier father was assigned to Augsburg in Germany from 1955 to 1958.
I arrived in Munich by TWA four engine aircraft . . . must look it up. I recall the aircraft was called Constellation.
A taxi took us to temporary quarters. It was dark and all five of us were tired, hung over from about 12 hours of travel. We landed in Ireland to refuel. All the kids were sick from eating dinner just before very rough air.
The temporary housing was cold, and mom heated some water for hot chocolate, as I recall. The cold house, the smell of the gas from the stove, and diesel truck fumes along the highway to the house are still with me.
Augsburg had a set of homes for the elderly.
I loved schnitzel sandwiches with a pickle!
We enjoyed a vacation to Bavarian sites like Berchtesgaden and Garmisch Partenkirchen and loved staying in the grand hotels.
I recall I had a bad cold, a bad cough, skied some (badly, with VERY long skis) and my dad watched boxing on TV. We saw all the famous castles near by.
Dentist was scary. The tools they used in those days were noisy and BIG, especially the Novocain nedles. I was bad at brushing my teeth so got lots of fillings.
Mom had issues and was in hospital at times. The military social demands required attending a lot of formal parties. Dad was required to attend, and there was a lot of pressure to drink alcohol, lots of alcohol.
I cut my head open the first day in new duplex brick Sullivan Square home in Augsburg, Germany (or maybe a suburb). Basement drying room, and shower we used for storage.
We Had several German Shepherd dogs. None worked out, too aggressive.
Augsburg in 1955-1958 was wonderful. I remember the clockwork, and the the Fuggerei. The Fuggerei was 150 small residences for old folks. The rent was $1.20 PER YEAR.
Puppet show for school day, Hans und Gretel story.
Ice show with filet, pommes frites, and orange drink.
